Sleep Week

The engineered sleep suite

A room designed to be an instrument, not an amenity.

Seven inputs are monitored and controlled together. Each is changed on a schedule so its effect on the next morning can be observed rather than assumed.

Sleep engineering lab

Twelve engineered systems in one 926 sq ft plan.

Overhead plan of the Johns Hopkins x Proper Sleep Luxe Sleep Lab suite, numbered 1 to 12 with medical-grade sleep system, circadian lighting, environment control panel, sound masking, air purification, smart toilet, soak tub, steam shower, sleep dashboard, temperature optimization, relaxation lounge and wellness station.
The Johns Hopkins–Proper sleep engineering suite is built upon the pre-existing wellness room concept and incorporates medical-grade technology to help guests solve their sleep issues efficiently.

Zone 1 of 7

Light

The strongest available lever on circadian timing.

  • Circadian-aligned morning light
  • Tunable white lighting
  • Amber evening setting
  • Near-total blackout
  • Reduced device light

Observed effect pattern

Earlier, better-timed light exposure is associated with earlier sleep onset the following night.

Illustrative response curve, direction, not a predicted result.

The full specification

Every controllable input, written down.

Light

The strongest available lever on circadian timing.

  • Circadian-aligned morning light
  • Tunable white lighting
  • Amber evening setting
  • Near-total blackout
  • Reduced device light

Temperature

The body needs to lose heat to fall and stay asleep.

  • Zoned room climate
  • Active sleep-surface heating or cooling
  • Guest-specific thermal schedule

Sound

Most awakenings are never remembered, but they are measurable.

  • Acoustic treatment
  • Noise monitoring
  • White, pink or nature-based soundscapes
  • Quiet-mode protocols

Air

Stale air is one of the most overlooked disruptors.

  • HEPA filtration
  • CO₂ monitoring
  • Humidity monitoring
  • Fresh-air strategy
  • Target humidity range

Scent

Optional, guest-controlled, and off by default.

  • Optional programmable scent cues
  • Guest-controlled and allergy-aware
  • No scent by default for sensitive guests

Nutrition

The last four hours before bed matter more than the diet label.

  • Earlier, lighter dinners
  • Caffeine and alcohol timing
  • Sleep-supportive meal design
  • Stable overnight energy strategy

Behavior

The routine is part of the room.

  • CBT-I-informed routines
  • Morning light
  • Movement
  • Wind-down sequence
  • Consistent wake time
  • Cognitive down-regulation

The base room, Performance Wellness Rooms, Santa Monica Proper

Stay active. Stay inspired. Stay in rhythm.

Sleep Week suites are built on the hotel's Performance Wellness Rooms: 926 square feet in the Landmark Building, designed by Kelly Wearstler, with movement and recovery tools already in the room.

Rest well to perform at your best.

Each bed carries crisp Bellino fine linens, hypoallergenic pillows and custom-designed throws for restorative sleep after a day of movement.

  • Bellino fine linens
  • Hypoallergenic pillows
  • Custom throws
  • Simmons Providence mattress

The bath

Recover and refresh in a spa-like bathroom.

Spacious travertine walk-in showers, marble vanities and premium Aesop amenities support the wind-down and morning routines.

  • Aesop amenities
  • Turkish cotton robes

Movement and recovery

Recovery tools already in the room.

The room keeps training and recovery rituals within reach without leaving the floor, which matters when we are testing how daytime load moves overnight physiology.

  • In-room Peloton bike with on-demand classes
  • Theragun for muscle recovery
  • Strength and functional training equipment
  • Proper Club Lounge: sauna, cold plunge, red light therapy
  • Curated wellness minibar

Technology

Work and wellness on the same controls.

Premium WiFi, Apple TV and bedside controls for blackout shades and lighting. The Proper TV app orders in-room dining, requests amenities or books a Proper Club Lounge session.

  • Bedside blackout shade control
  • Bedside lighting control
  • Apple TV and premium WiFi
  • Proper TV app requests

Room description, dimensions and amenities are drawn from Santa Monica Proper's published Performance Wellness Rooms information. Square footage is approximate and actual rooms may vary. Sleep Week is a proposed collaboration; the sleep-engineering layer described above is added to this base room.

Three-night mattress comparison

Three surfaces. One per night. Judged on your data.

The bed is a variable, not a fixture. Each measured night uses a different sleep surface while light, temperature, sound, air, bedding and pre-sleep protocol stay fixed, so any change in the record can be attributed to the surface itself.

The reference surface. Independently pocketed coils give zoned support with airflow through the coil layer, and a thin latex comfort layer keeps contour shallow. Most guests recognise it as familiar, which makes it a useful baseline for the two nights that follow.

Build, top to base

Comfort

Natural latex, ~5 cm, shallow contour, fast recovery

Transition

Zoned foam rail to reduce shoulder and hip pressure

Support

Individually pocketed coils, firmer through the lumbar zone

Base

High-density perimeter for stable edge exit

Likely to suit you if

  • You change position several times a night
  • You share a bed but are not motion sensitive
  • You run warm and want airflow through the core

Watch for: Coil transmission can register as micro-awakenings when a partner rises frequently.

Recorded on this night

  • Sleep efficiency
  • Awakenings
  • Position changes
  • Time to first deep sleep

01

One per night

A single surface is used for the full sleep opportunity, never split across a night.

02

Everything else fixed

Light, temperature, sound, air, bedding and pre-sleep protocol stay constant.

03

Blinded where practical

Order is rotated and surface identity withheld until the review to limit expectation effects.

04

Ranked on your data

Objective metrics are weighted first; morning ratings break close results.

Surfaces are premium consumer specifications, not medical devices. Sleep Week does not sell mattresses; any commercial relationship with a manufacturer is disclosed. Three nights indicate a direction, not a certainty, the recommendation is a specification to trial at home, with your own numbers attached.
